about

Written on the Big Island of Hawai'i and recorded in a Swiss village, "Mauna a Wakea" is a song that crosses multiple genres.

The production uses a simple and effective acoustic guitar underlick to provide the rhythmic backbone of the song, layers of bubbling analogue synthesizers, layered claps and background vocals, as well as tuned 808 kick drums and basslines to frame the storytelling folk song about moons (full and new), a sacred mountain and waterfall, and stones moved from high places to low places and back again.

Listen if you enjoy The Microphones, Mike Love, and Medicine for the People.

lyrics

On top of Mauna a Wakea
Left some offerings on the altars there
Took a stone from her highest summit

In the full blood moon light at the ocean
Where I dropped it under

New moon solstice in Waipi'o Valley
At the waterfall Hi'ilawe
Took a stone from her river bank
To the top of the mountain at dawn
Where I gave my thanks

On top of Mauna a Wakea
Left some offerings on the altars there
Took a stone from her highest summit
In the full blood moon light at the ocean
Where I dropped it under

In the full blood moon light at the ocean
Yeah I dropped it under

In the full blood moon light at the ocean
Hey I dropped it under
